I have never had as terrible of an experience with any business as I've had with American Family. After years of business, we cancelled our auto, condo, and motorcycle insurance policies with American Family on 3/17/17. I have always paid for all three policies on a month-to-month basis. After I cancelled, they refunded me for the unused portion of the month, just as all insurance companies would do. Then, on 4/24/17, I received a "Final Notice" (this was the first notice I received) that I actually owe $187.03 for my motorcycle policy. I called them to ask about it, and the woman I spoke with told me that regarding motorcycle policies, they charge for 9 full months of the policy regardless of cancellation date. I have never heard of anything so absurd. I paid the $187 bill to avoid being sent to a collections agency (who sends a bill to collections after one month?!), but this is an egregious scam and I want this money refunded. No other agency requires payment for months in which a person does not have coverage, that is a completely absurd policy. Our new agent with the more superior Allstate (superior in both customer services and pricing) agreed, and told us to pursue this as it sounds very much like a scam.
The complaint with the BBB I filed is ongoing, and now they are at the point where they are trying to pass me off to the MN department of commerce. What that has to do with our problem I have no idea, but it is clear they have no intention of owning up to their fraudulent practices. Avoid AmFam at all costs, they will scam you if you cancel.
